What is a Solenoid Valve? (How It Works)

A solenoid valve (also called a magnetic valve, SOV valve, sol valve, or electromagnetic valve) is an electromechanically operated valve that controls the flow of liquids or gases using an electromagnetic solenoid coil.

When an electric current passes through the solenoid coil, it creates a magnetic field that moves a plunger (or pilot piston) inside the valve body. This mechanical movement opens or closes the valve port — allowing or stopping fluid flow. When the electrical signal is removed, a spring returns the plunger to its original position (in spring-return / normally closed or normally open designs).

This simple but reliable working principle makes solenoid valves the preferred choice for:
• Remote and automated fluid control — no manual operation needed
• Fast switching — opens/closes in milliseconds
• Fail-safe operation — spring return ensures safe position on power failure
• Integration with PLCs, DCS, and automation systems
• Compact, lightweight design for tight installation spaces

TYPES OF SOLENOID VALVES — COMPLETE GUIDE

CBT Flow Solutions supplies solenoid valves in all major configurations. Understanding the different types helps you select the right valve for your application:

1. DIRECT ACTING SOLENOID VALVE
The solenoid coil directly opens or closes the valve port without relying on fluid pressure. Works at zero differential pressure. Best for: small flow rates, low-pressure systems, vacuum applications, and systems where no pressure differential is guaranteed.

2. PILOT OPERATED SOLENOID VALVE (Indirect Acting)
Uses the line pressure to assist opening — a small pilot orifice is opened by the solenoid, and line pressure acts on a larger diaphragm or piston to open the main port. More energy-efficient for larger pipe sizes. Requires minimum operating pressure (typically 0.3 bar). Best for: water systems, large orifice sizes, high flow applications.

3. 2-WAY SOLENOID VALVE (2-Port / 2/2-Way)
Has one inlet and one outlet. Controls ON/OFF flow in a single pipeline. Available as normally closed (NC — closed when de-energized) or normally open (NO — open when de-energized). Most common solenoid valve type. Best for: water shut-off, compressed air control, gas line isolation.

4. 3-WAY SOLENOID VALVE (3-Port)
Has three ports — one inlet and two outlets (or two inlets and one outlet). Used to direct flow between two circuits, or to pressurize and exhaust a pneumatic actuator. Best for: pneumatic actuator control, directional switching, mixing and diverting.

5. 5/2-WAY SOLENOID VALVE (Pneumatic)
Five ports and two positions. Used to control double-acting pneumatic cylinders and actuators. Available as monostable (spring return) or bistable (double solenoid). Best for: pneumatic automation, cylinder control, valve actuator control.

6. NAMUR SOLENOID VALVE (3-Port Regulating)
Designed specifically for direct mounting on pneumatic actuators per NAMUR standard (VDI/VDE 3845). Eliminates external tubing, reduces installation footprint, and improves response time. Best for: valve automation, integrated actuator mounting.

7. NORMALLY CLOSED (NC) SOLENOID VALVE
Valve remains CLOSED when de-energized. Opens only when electric power is applied. Fail-safe closed — if power fails, valve automatically shuts. Best for: safety shutdown, emergency isolation, steam and hot water service.

8. NORMALLY OPEN (NO) SOLENOID VALVE
Valve remains OPEN when de-energized. Closes only when power is applied. Fail-safe open. Best for: cooling water systems, applications that must flow on power failure, energy-saving continuous flow applications.

9. PNEUMATIC SOLENOID VALVE
Controls compressed air supply to pneumatic actuators, cylinders, and air tools. Available in 5/2-way, 5/3-way, and 4/2-way configurations. Best for: pneumatic automation systems, air cylinder control, valve automation.

10. WATER SOLENOID VALVE / ELECTRIC VALVE FOR WATER
Specifically designed for water service — potable water, irrigation, cooling water, and wastewater. Available in brass and SS316 body. Sizes from 1/2″ to 2″. Best for: water treatment plants, irrigation systems, building services, cooling towers.

11. STEAM SOLENOID VALVE
Rated for high-temperature steam service. Features high-temperature seals (PTFE or Viton), Class F or H insulation coils, and stainless steel body for steam compatibility. Best for: pharmaceutical steam systems, food processing, autoclave steam control.

12. HIGH PRESSURE SOLENOID VALVE
Rated for high-pressure service — up to 50 bar and above depending on model. Available in stainless steel and brass body with reinforced construction. Best for: hydraulic systems, high-pressure gas lines, test rigs.

13. GAS SOLENOID VALVE / LPG SOLENOID VALVE
Approved for use with flammable gases (LPG, natural gas, CNG). Features ATEX or IECEx approval for hazardous area use. Best for: gas distribution systems, burner control, LPG dispensing.

14. VACUUM SOLENOID VALVE
Designed for vacuum service — controls airflow in vacuum systems. Best for: vacuum packaging, laboratory equipment, medical devices, semiconductor manufacturing.

15. MINIATURE / MICRO SOLENOID VALVE
Compact body design for space-constrained installations. Available in 1/4″ and smaller sizes. Best for: analytical instruments, medical equipment, laboratory automation.

16. PROPORTIONAL SOLENOID VALVE
Provides variable flow control proportional to the electrical input signal (typically 0–10V or 4–20mA). Used where precise flow regulation is needed. Best for: flow control, pressure regulation, dosing systems.

FAQs

A solenoid valve (also called magnetic valve, SOV valve, sol valve, or electromagnetic valve) is an electromechanically operated valve that controls fluid flow using an electromagnetic coil. When electrical current passes through the coil, it creates a magnetic field that moves a plunger to open or close the valve port. When de-energized, a spring returns the plunger to its original position (fail-safe). Solenoid valves enable fast, precise, remote-controlled fluid switching in pneumatic, hydraulic, water, gas, and steam systems.

A direct acting solenoid valve operates entirely by the magnetic force of the solenoid coil — it works at zero differential pressure and suits small flow rates and low-pressure systems. A pilot operated solenoid valve uses fluid line pressure to assist opening a larger main port — it is more energy-efficient for larger sizes but requires a minimum operating pressure (typically 0.3 bar). Choose direct acting for vacuum, zero pressure, or small orifice applications; pilot operated for large flow, water, and high-pressure systems.

A normally closed (NC) solenoid valve is closed when de-energized and opens only when electric power is applied — fail-safe closed. A normally open (NO) solenoid valve is open when de-energized and closes when power is applied — fail-safe open. Choose NC for safety shutdown and emergency isolation (valve closes on power failure). Choose NO for cooling and systems that must continue flowing if power is lost.

Solenoid valves are available in three main body materials: Brass — for water, compressed air, oil, and non-corrosive fluids (most economical, most common); Stainless Steel SS316 — for corrosive media, pharmaceutical, food grade, and chemical applications; Aluminum — for lightweight pneumatic automation applications. The body material must be compatible with the fluid media and operating temperature.

CBT Flow Solutions stocks Rotex solenoid valves in 24V DC (for PLC/DCS controlled systems), 110V AC (for international/export applications), and 230V AC (for direct Indian mains connection). 48V AC and custom voltages available on order. 24V DC is recommended for new automation projects for safety and compatibility with modern control systems.

A NAMUR solenoid valve is a 3-port solenoid valve designed to mount directly on pneumatic actuators per NAMUR standard (VDI/VDE 3845). It eliminates external tubing between the solenoid valve and actuator, reducing installation cost, space, and potential leak points. NAMUR solenoid valves are used in valve automation applications where the solenoid valve is mounted directly on the actuator yoke bracket.

Solenoid valve price in India depends on body size (1/4″ to 2″), body material (brass or SS316), type (2-way, 3-way, NAMUR), voltage (24VDC or 230VAC), and coil protection (IP65 or IP67). Standard brass 2-port solenoid valves start from approximately ₹800–₹2,500 for 1/4″ to 1/2″ sizes. SS316 and special models are priced higher.
